Annotations for This is the Best Day Ever

Lyric: [Verse]
Annotation:
I cant think of anywhere else to put this but i think that this song is about the demolition lovers. This could be how they met which would make their relationship all the more messed up. Another piece of evidence is the last line of the song “One day we’ll run away” this is seen in Demo lovers because they did run away together (aw thats nice)

Lyric: Well, I thought I heard you say to me, ”We’ll go so far, far as we can
And I just can’t stay, one day, we’ll run away”
Annotation:
Given that they require machines and monitoring to live, they are likely to die in the hospital. Instead the main character imagines them escaping for as long as they can before they finally succumb to their conditions.

Lyric: This day, someday, we kept falling down
One day, this day, all we had to keep us safe
And if we never sleep again
 It would never end
Annotation:
The singer acknowledges that it’s too late and too dangerous to try and escape the hospital, because the woman he’s befriended is obviously fighting a disease that must’ve progressed over time. So in short, he thinks that sleeping forever or death would end this painful cycle that they are both bound to. (The cycle of their everyday life in the hospital.)

Lyric: You left my heart an open wound
 And I love you for
Annotation:
The usage of the phrase “open wound” when referring to heartbreak ties back to the predicament the protagonist is in. The main character has clearly suffered some major injury, yet the most pain delivered to him is emotional.

Lyric: Every hour, on the hour, they drew blood
Annotation:
Likely referring to blood tests considering the previous themes about being in the emergency room.

Lyric: Well, I thought I heard you say, ”I like you, we can get out
We don’t have to stay, stay inside this place”
Annotation:
They’ve formed a friendship and they’re planning to escape together

Lyric: As they stared us down when we met in the emergency room
Annotation:
Seeing as they’re in the emergency room after attempting suicide, the people staring them down could be doctors or psychiatrists examining them.

Lyric: And we can run from the backdrop of these gears and scalpels
Annotation:
The song’s story takes place in a hospital, where a couple is planning to escape. The gears and scalpels are just some the medical tools mentioned in this verse; scalpels in particular can be especially dangerous if not handled well. It seems that Gerard may have a fear of hospitals or at least an interest in the uneasiness of them, as The Black Parade starts off with the protagonist dying in a hospital.

Lyric: Well, I felt I couldn’t take another day inside this place
Annotation:
The narrator is losing his mind by being stuck inside the hospital. The first verse insinuates that the narrator wants to run away from the “backdrop of these gears and scalpels” and that he’s slowly going insane by the “tick-tock bang of monitors.” The beginning of the second verse is the narrator hitting his breaking point. He feels that he physically and mentally cannot stand to be in that hospital for any longer.

Lyric: At every hour goes the tick-tock bang of monitors
Annotation:
They likely ended up in the hospital from overdosing or attempted suicide, so it is only expected that they would have worse-than-hell headaches, resulting in the normal “tick-tock” of a monitor seeming, to them, the volume of someone banging on a wall.

Lyric: Someday, this day, set the Ferris wheel ablaze
Annotation:
This line can be interpreted in two ways, following the plot of the song. The first is that the protagonist and his love are trying to escape the situation they’re trapped in. The Ferris wheel is being used as a metaphor for their life: they’re stuck in a loop they can’t get out of without help from outside forces. To set the “Ferris wheel ablaze” would mean they’d be free- but could die in the aftermath- much like they would if they escaped from the hospital. The second is to wreak havoc. The two of them obviously aren’t in their desired circumstance, so they’re going to ruin what they can as an act of rebellion. A burning Ferris wheel can also be seen on the album art, as seen below.

Lyric: Starless eyes for heaven’s sake, but I hear you anyway
Annotation:
Many say that the eyes are the opening to one’s soul, but Gerard can’t see the person’s soul through their eyes. They are dull and lifeless, however, he still understands them.

Lyric: And in our beds, I could hear you breathe with help from cold machines
Annotation:
They were really hurt, and needed medical help. The cold machines refer to medical instruments, such as IVs or ventilators for when someone is intubated.
